Windows on Society by Linda
Orams, The Society of Limners Newsletter, Sept 2007.
Unicorn Press have recently
published two handy-sized books (6.5" square) on miniature artists
Nicholas Hilliard and Richard Cosway.
They are both informative and beautifully illustrated, with an index and
extensive bibliography for further reading.
Karen Hearn, curator of 16th century art at Tate Britain, is author of
'Nicholas Hilliard'. Hilliard's portrait miniatures open a remarkable
window on to the highest levels of English society in Elizabethan and
Jacobean times and it is impossible to remain immune to their charm and
charisma. His images give us an idea of the appearance of Elizabeth I,
Mary Queen of Scots, Sir Walter Raleigh, James I and many others.
Karen Hearn knowledgeably and succinctly gives an account of Hilliard's
life, environment and techniques followed by 30 colour illustrations
each with explanatory notes.
Dr Stephen Lloyd, Senior
Curator at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh is the
author of the second book, 'Richard Cosway'.
Cosway was one of the most significant and versatile artistic
personalities in Regency Britain. He became the most important,
influential and fashionable portrait miniaturist of his time and his
flattering portrayals have come to epitomise Regency Society. Among his
most well known portraits are those of George IV when Prince of Wales,
to whom Cosway was close to at the time.
Dr Lloyd's 'Cosway' follows the same format as the Hilliard. He begins
with an entertaining and informative of Cosway's life and work.
This is followed by 30 illustrations including Arthur Wellesley, later
1st Duke of Wellington, Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire, The Prince
Regent and an especially charming portrait of Louisa, Cosway's own
little daughter.
Both books are an absolute
must for any miniature lover and are priced at £15 each.
